Light City Baltimore Seeking Visual Artists, Performers, Speakers

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts seeks proposals from artists, artist collaborators, speakers and community organizations for Light City 2017. The second annual Light City Baltimore is set to take place Friday, March 31 through Saturday, April 8, 2017. The festival is open from 7pm-11pm on weeknights and from 7pm until midnight on the weekends.  The following calls for entry are open: BGE Light Art Walk, Light City Innovation Conference Call for Ideas, Neighborhood Lights Community Expression of Interest, Neighborhood Lights Artist Request for Qualifications.

Artists and artist collaborative groups are encouraged to apply to have an installation featured in the 2017 BGE Light Art Walk. Central to Light City along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the BGE Light Art Walk features more than 50 attractions including but not limited to illuminated visual artworks such as large-scale installations, projections, interactive technologies, performances and more. For 2017, 20-30 installations are being sought to receive funding between $5,000 and $75,000. Artists interested in submitting a proposal should consider both the audience and the outdoor environment of the festival when proposing a project. Each artwork on the BGE Light Art Walk should be open and operational for all festival hours for each of the nine nights Light City is open to the public. Neighborhood Lights is an immersive community arts program of Light City Baltimore that extends the magic of Light City Baltimore to neighborhoods throughout Baltimore City. Artists are selected to work directly with one of seven participating neighborhoods to create an illuminated public art project within the neighborhood of their residency during Light City. Projects can include but are not limited to: large scale projections, shop window based projections and installations, illuminated public sculptures or monuments, performances, celebrations and new traditions that integrate light, creative uses for everyday lights such as string lights, and/or full scale neighborhood installations. All projects funded through the Neighborhood Lights program must be free to the public. Projects will be fully funded up to $15,000. Application deadline: Monday, August 1, 2016

Complementing the Light City festival at night, the Light City innovation conference takes place during the day. The five-day conference dedicated to powering social change brings together thought leaders and innovators from key industries to explore one question: How do we become a more responsible and equitable society? The innovation conference seeks speaking engagements, interactive experiences, keynotes and panel discussions that are situated within the innovation conference site. Sound Off Live! is a way for up-and-coming bands to audition for a performance slot at Light City, Artscape and/or Baltimore Book Festival. New for this year, Sound Off Live! will take place during Free Fall Baltimore in October, 2016. Bands will be selected to perform live in front of an audience and a panel of judges at a location that will be announced at a later date. Bands will have 15 minutes to perform (three songs).
