The Indiana Recycling Coalition is looking to commission a select group of artists to create artworks made from repurposed materials, to be sold at the IRC’s annual gala fundraising event on November 12, 2016.

Six artists will be commissioned and will be able to tour a recycling facility in Indianapolis to source materials for their artwork.  Artists will also be provided with $25 gift certificates to Goodwill, $25 gift certificates to Sherwin-Williams for mis-tinted paint, and $10 to Indy Upcycle to purchase additional materials, and may incorporate found objects or repurposed materials sourced from other locations.   Each artist will create one artwork of any size or in any medium or format of their choosing, consistent with their own artistic vision and practice and available materials.

The finished artworks will have a public preview and then will be offered for auction at the IRC’s gala event, with the artist specifying a minimum bid price. If the artwork is sold that evening, the artist and IRC will split the sale price equally.  Unsold works will be returned to the artist for future exhibition and/or sale.

In addition to the sales opportunity, artworks will compete for a first, second and third prize of $300, $200 and $100 respectively, to be determined by the gala attendees through an on-site voting process.  Artists will also receive two tickets to the IRC gala ($190 value).

Detailed information will be provided to the artists selected for the commission.

Selection Process

Interested artists must submit their qualifications and images of past work made from recycled or repurposed materials to the Arts Council of Indianapolis on or before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016.  Representatives from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indiana Recycling Coalition will determine the six artists to be commissioned.

Note:  while this is the intended selection process, in the event of an insufficient number of qualified applicants the Arts Council of Indianapolis reserves the right to invite artists of their choosing; and also reserves the right to cancel the opportunity entirely at any point and for any reason.

Selection Criteria

The six artists to be commissioned will be selected based upon the following criteria:

  • Artistic quality and craftsmanship:  artist’s past work is innovative, creative and stylistically distinctive, and displays skill with materials and techniques
  • Aesthetic sensibility:  artist’s submission displays an aesthetic that would reflect well on the Indiana Recycling Coalition and its mission
  • Saleability:  artist’s submission indicates that past work has a strong sales record and future production will likely find a market at the Indiana Recycling Coalition’s gala event
