The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) and Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) are currently seeking the qualifications of artists for public art at NCCC in Winsted, CT associated with the Joyner Health Science Center. Interior and/or exterior site-specific installations may be considered by one or more artists.
Budget: $135,000.00
Eligibility: Artists MUST register a portfolio in the Art in Public Spaces Registry. Submit a new registration or update an existing profile by the deadline indicated above. Review the registry webpage for more information about the registration process. The NCCC project is open to both in-state and out-of-state artists with preference given to in-state artists.
About Northwestern Connecticut Community College
Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) is one of twelve community colleges in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system. The mission of NCCC is to inspire learning through accessible, high quality education. Founded in 1965, NCCC celebrates more than 50 years of serving the communities throughout the Litchfield Hills, and takes pride in offering a strong liberal arts education to students. NCCC’s student body is made up of many first-time, first-generation college students and a substantial number of non-traditional students. The full-time and part-time student population was 1,614 in the fall of 2014. Women represent 68.7% of that number, over 59% of NCCC’s students are under the age of 25, and 73.8%
attend part-time. NCCC offers approximately 30 degree programs and 20 certificate programs.
Located in Winsted, a bucolic small town recognized for its historic architecture, the campus is comprised of 11 buildings. Some are preserved historic homes converted into campus office buildings, while others are new structures that complement the community. The core of the campus is located adjacent to the town green with the new Joyner Health Science Center located up the road from campus along the Route 44 / Route 8 interchange.
The Joyner Health Science Center will be the home to the Veterinary Technology, Allied Health, and Nursing programs.
Project Description
The college has expressed an interest in public art that connects to the greater vision of NCCC and the community while considering the users of the Joyner Health Science Center. Interior and exterior locations are under consideration at this time and the project opportunity may be split between one or more artists/projects.
The public artwork for NCCC should instill a welcoming presence that promotes a sense of community. It may highlight the positive impact of a community college educational experience and spur contemplation. The work of art may speak to student growth and development and the path toward reaching future goals. Artists may also consider any of the following terms and/or phrases; creativity, innovation, journey, collaborative learning, and engagement.
The artist will likely install after the building is occupied and must conduct their installation in accordance with NCCC’s schedule and terms. Also be aware that projects commissioned through the Art in Public Spaces program generally require the services of a Connecticut licensed engineer which is the responsibility of the artist to procure.
Project Timeline (all dates are subject to change)
How to Apply: Register a portfolio in the Art in Public Spaces Registry, or update an existing portfolio, no later than September 7, 2016. Only artists with registered portfolios will be considered for this opportunity. If you already have a portfolio registered, and it does not need updating, you need do nothing more; your work will automatically be considered.
