ABOUT THE SHOW
This a campy, dark comedy with a science fiction twist. Seymour Krelborn, a meek shop clerk at Mushnik’s Flower shop, is tired of life in the gutter and dreams of fame, fortune and love. His heart is set on Audrey who is entangled with a sadistic dentist. Everything changes when Seymour finds and cares for a strange plant that has devious dreams of its own.
ROLES AVAILABLE
Seymour Krelborn
An insecure florist’s clerk and our eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. Gender: male Stage Age: 20 to 35 Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: A2
Audrey
Bleached-blond bombshell, and secret love of Seymour’s life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor. Gender: female Stage Age: 20 to 35 Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: G#3
Mr. Mushnik
The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour’s nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative. Think Nathan Lane or Zero Mostel type. Gender: male Stage Age: 55 to 65 Vocal range top: F4 Vocal range bottom: G2
Orin Scrivello
An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey’s abusive boyfriend, who is the first “meal” for the Plant. Gender: male Stage Age: 30 to 40 Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: G2
Ensemble
Various other characters with lines or lyrics, including reporters, salesmen, the wife of the editor of Time Magazine. These parts are usually doubled by the actor playing Orin Scrivello, but not necessarily.
The Plant (Audrey II) Puppeteer.
An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. Puppeteer doubles as other sizes of the plant. Must be in excellent physical condition, as operating the two larger puppets is physically demanding.
Voice Of The Plant
An actor/vocalist located offstage. The voice is that of a conniving, street-smart ‘villain.’ A funky Rhythm and Blues voice is best. A deep, menacing laugh is a must. Gender: male Age: sounds like 30 to 50+ Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: G2
Crystal, Ronnette And Chiffon
African-American (or other ethnicity) street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. May be expanded to five urchins at director’s discretion. Gender: female Stage Age: 18 to 30 Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: Ab3
