 Calgary, CANADA, Unknown

The City of Calgary (The City) Public Art Program and the Transportation Department are seeking a professional Artist or Artist team with established public art experience for the development and execution of a permanent public art project adjacent to the new 12 Street S.E. Bridge.

Budget:  $220,000 CDN.

An opportunity exists at this site to create a public artwork within the landscape or on the vertical steel retaining wall at the northwest corner of this location. The artist will be expected to work alongside the landscape architect to ensure the artwork is part of the overall site design for this location. To support this, two opportunities to engage with the local community will be provided between March and May 2017, prior to the concept being developed. The artist should be prepared to work with the community and capital project team to understand the use of the site and the essence of the immediate area. The artwork should speak to the goals and objectives intended for this site.

The public artwork will be in an area which has a high level of pedestrian use and will require the design and implementation of a project which is safe, durable, low maintenance and vandal resistant. Given the often extreme nature of Calgary’s environment, the work must be able to withstand continual sunlight exposure. Drastic variations in temperature must be considered and addressed when determining the final artwork due to the public nature and usage of this location.

Selection Process

The public art project will be awarded through a two (2) stage jury process. In stage one (1) the jury will choose a short list of applicants based on qualifications. In stage two (2) the jury will interview short listed applicants and determine the final project award.
