Atelier InSite, which is responsible for the administration of site-specific public art on the Clemson University campus, is pleased to announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a major, permanent, exterior public art work to be located within the newly expanded University Athletic  (football) Precinct. The artwork that is ultimately selected for the project must be reflective of the site, taking into account the precinct’s overall spatial and aesthetic properties, and encourage interactivity and/or functionality. In addition to these principles, artwork deemed unsafe and/fragile would not be eligible for consideration.

Budget: $215,000 total budget for the design, fabrication, engineering and installation of site-specific public artwork. Several finalists will be selected and awarded an honorarium of $2000 to submit a detailed proposal.

Artwork Location Description
The new practice facility is approximately 140,000 square feet, and will be the new home to all football operational functions. The facility includes coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, recruiting areas, student-athlete/coaches’ locker rooms, a weight room, training room, hydro-therapy area, equipment room, dining areas and associated support spaces. The new facility will be constructed adjacent to the new Indoor Football Practice Facility and the existing outdoor practice fields. This new facility will bring all football activity into close proximity and allow for more efficient daily operations.

Project Description
The breadth of the project area includes adjacencies to the Old Seneca River, the main drive leading into the facility and a roundabout area at the entrance of the facility. No work may be affixed to the building.

Artwork Goals
Artwork implemented for the project will be reflective of the qualities and attributes of exploring metaphoric aspects of the human condition. The work should be reflective of the human endeavor to excel mentally and physically with interpretations; literally, abstractly and otherwise considered. In the spirit of collaboration, this project must take into consideration the use of the site, including the broad scope of individuals that experience the Athletic Precinct. The installed artwork must not in any way interfere with daily operations occurring in the precinct.

Selection Criteria
Atelier InSite and its constituency are composed of art/design professionals, community stakeholders, and students. This group reviews submissions and selects the artist(s) that best meet the requirements based on the information submitted in the artists’ materials.
