Teen Creative Writing and Other Classes Now Offered by Lafayette Writers’ Studio

Teen Creative Writing Storytelling is the basis for all modes of creative writing. Whether you write poems, are working on a memoir, or are penning your seventh fan fiction novel, if you can tell a good story, you can write anything. Teen Creative Writing will offer a place for you to discover how the foundations of writing can help you develop your story-writing strengths while meeting other writers.

Each week they will read excerpts of a variety of short pieces to explore how writers apply foundational techniques in their work. These discussions will include lessons on imagery, character development, elements of plot, dialogue, narration and revision. Writers will then work on exercises to further build their understanding of these building blocks of effective stories. By the conclusion of the course all students will have written one complete story, and will have both the spark and the knowledge to keep writing.

WINTER/SPRING 2017 CLASSES

Writing Fiction and Nonfiction Workshop
Wednesdays March 8, 22, 29, April 5, 12, 19, 26 & May 3 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Writers need one another for feedback and community, but also to generate ideas and learn from one another. In this workshop writers will have the opportunity to come together to evaluate published work as well as that of our peers. This workshop will be demanding in that you will be expected to read 30-40 pages of material every week (both published work and that of your peers), to prepare written feedback for your peers’ work for each two-hour class session, and to submit at least two original pieces of writing for workshop during the session. Together we will work to figure out your writing strengths, and we will also identify areas for improvement. Your tuition includes a new copy of the book You Should Pity Us Instead.

More than Meets the Eye: Ways of Reading, Writing and Talking about Poems with Lauren Mallett
Thursday, March 30 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Poems are not the locked boxes we may think they are. Poems have much to offer when we set aside the goal of “getting it.” This class will focus, instead, on trusting–and talking through!–our emotional experience of sound, line, movement, and voice in the poems we will read and discuss.

Open Mic
Thursday, April 27 from 7pm to 9pm
