Bellevue, WA, Unknown
The Sound Transit Art Program (STart) is developing a major artwork to screen the perimeter of a planned train yard in Bellevue, Washington, known as the Sound Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility: East (OMFE). STart is seeking a professional artist who demonstrates an interest in and has past experience developing linear/wall-based artwork. The artwork response is anticipated to be fabricated largely in metal.
Budget: $75,000 for design, $750,000 for fabrication and installation
Eligibility: Professional artists or artist teams residing in the U.S. or in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
The OMFE will be sited in a commercial area currently dominated by distribution warehouses that is transitioning into a mixed-use area of office, retail, and residential developments. The western edge of the facility will run directly adjacent to a major north-south pedestrian and bicycle trail, part of the Eastside Railway Corridor trail that King County is developing for both recreation and non-motorized commuting.
The perimeter screening art opportunity may take the form of a fence, additional components to the fence or objects along the top of a fence on the western edge of the OMFE site. The artwork project will be a limited collaboration with the OMFE’s design/build team. Fabrication and construction of some portion of the perimeter fence (including structural supports) will remain in the project’s construction contract. The OMFE perimeter treatment will be 8-feet-high, and by default a metal, fence on a concrete base.
