The Art and Subculture of Zine Making

Basile Gallery, Eskenazi Hall at Herron School of Art and Design

June 14 to July 15, 2017

In conjunction with Gluestick Fest (the second annual Indianapolis zine and small publishing festival), this exhibition will highlight local and national DIY publishing and art-making. The exhibition will feature master copies and photocopied zines along with original art, concept sketches, preparatory drawings, and other aspects of the zine making process. Zines, short for magazine, are self-published works that explore a variety of topics from poetry to politics. Generally produced in editions of fewer than 100, zines have been utilized by various subcultures that are informed by the “do-it- yourself” ethos. This exhibition will highlight the intersection of art, publication, protest, and the of diversity voices in zines and zine culture.
