LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

SYNOPSIS:
After twenty years of un-wedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the ‘family business’: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the “star” performer ‘Zaza’. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.

SYNOPSIS:
Taste and imagination, the two key ingredients for a first-rate revue, abound in this fresh take on the R & H canon who probably never imagined ‘Shall We Dance?’ as a comic pas de deux for a towering beauty and her diminutive admirer, nor did they suspect that one day a lovelorn young lad might pose the musical question, ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’ But that’s precisely the kind of invention lavished upon this new revue, with innovative musical arrangements including a sultry Andrews Sisters-esque ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair,’ a swingin’ ‘Honeybun’ worthy of the Modernaires, and a jazzy ‘Kansas City’ which leaves no question how terrifically up to date the songs of R&H remain.

SYNOPSIS:
Waking from hibernation in the Spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Part vaudeville, part make believe… all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout the seasons.

FROG: Caring and loyal. Always looking out for his friends. The calmer, more zen of both he and Toad. Simultaneously adventurous and assured. Vocal range top: A6; Vocal range bottom: A3

TOAD: THIS ROLE IS CAST A hard worker, but impatient for results. Self-conscious. Stubborn. A good friend to Frog. Timid.

THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

SYNOPSIS:
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

CAST BREAKDOWN:
CHIP TOLENTINO: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. Also plays the role of: Jesus Christ: Deity invoked by a speller in need.

LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUNENIERRE (schwartzy): Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year.

LEAF CONEYBEAR: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. Also plays the role of: Carl Dad: Schwarzy’s main trainer, the more intense and competitive of Schwarzy’s fathers.

WILLIAM BARFEE: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous “Magic Foot” method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive.

MARCY PARK: A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year’s nationals. She speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called “Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows.” She is also not allowed to cry.

OLIVE OSTROVSKY: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms.

RONA LISA PERETTI: THIS ROLE IS CAST
The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. Also plays the role of: Olive’s Mom: A fantasy version of Olive’s mom at her Ashram in India.

DOUGLAS PANCH: The Vice Principle. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years’ absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an “incident” at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in “a better place” now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections.

MITCH MAHONEY: The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort, but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. Also plays: Dan Dad: the more laid back and ineffectual of Schwarzy’s fathers. Also plays the role of: Olive’s Dad A fantasy version of Olive’s dad coming to the bee from work.

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

SYNOPSIS:
This wildly warm-hearted theatrical experience kicks off when the Music Hall Royale (a hilariously loony Victorian musical troupe) “puts on” its flamboyant rendition of an unfinished Dickens mystery in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Now, Miss Bud is, in turn, engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood. Our title character disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve-but has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunnit? Musical numbers include The Wage of Sin, Perfect Strangers, Both Sides of the Coin, Don’t Quit While You’re Ahead and Moonfall. The giddy playfulness of this play-within-a-play draws the audience toward one of the play’s most talked-about features, which allows the audience to vote on the solution as prelude to the most unusual and hilarious finale!

MALE ROLES
MR. WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT: Chairman of the Music Hall Royale; doubles as Mayor Thomas Sapsea, 50-65, witty, erudite, a master of ceremonies with sparkling panache and a dry as dust sense of humor.

JOHN JASPER: Doubles as Mr. Clive Paget, sexy and volatile, matinee idol good looks with a twisted danger underneath the facade, tenor. 30-45

NEVILLE LANDLESS: Doubles as Mr. Victor Grinstead, handsome, dark and swarthy, given to bravado over subtley, 30’s bari-tenor.

REVEREND CHRISPARKLE: Doubles as Mr. Cedric Moncrieffe, sweet and avuncular, could be stout, bari-tenor, 50’s to 60’s.

BAZZARD: Doubles as Mr. Phillip Bax and as Waiter, 30-45, thin built character man, mood range baritone, terribly humble, a bit of a ‘droopy dog’ type with good comic timing.

DURDLES: Doubles as Mr. Nick Cricker, excellent clown with vaudevillian skills, 35-55, a traditional busker type. Bari-tenor.

FEMALE ROLES
FLO: An energetic everywoman with great comic timing- she is wardrobe and props mistress and ersatz stage manager. 30’s. Vocal range can vary though a capable soprano for group numbers would be preferred.

ROSA BUD: Doubles as Miss Deirdre Peregrine, 20’s to early 30’s, beautiful but also possessing of fine comic timing, legit lyric soprano.

EDWIN DROOD: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Doubles as Miss Alice Nutting, Female actor playing woman impersonating a man; Nutting is haughty and petulant, Drood is warm, earnest and extremely likable. Clear, clarion vocal sound, Belts to a D.

HELENA LANDLESS: Doubles as Miss Janet Conover, described as “unpredictable,” she is fiery and bold with her broad strike comedy. mid range belt.

PRINCESS PUFFER: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Doubles as Miss Angela Prysock, the music hall’s favorite funny dame of a certain age (50+), the life of any party, she will never be caught reciting Shakespeare. Warm belt, also a sensitive cabaret chanteuse.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

SYNOPSIS:
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the new smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock’n’roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, the four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam session ever. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including, “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Fever”, “That’s All Right”, “Walk the Line”, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”, “Sixteen Tons”, “Hound Dog” and many more!

ALL ROLES ARE CAST WITH THE EXCEPTION OF:
CARL PERKINS: (late twenties – early thirties) – actor/singer/guitar player (lead guitar); he was the American pioneer of rockabilly music and best known for his song “Blue Suede Shoes”; must be an excellent lead guitarist. Please prepare a Carl Perkins song (or song in that style or from the era) and accompany yourself on the guitar. An Amp will be provided. In the production, Carl Perkins sings: “Matchbox”, “Who Do You Love?”, “My Babe”, “See You Later, Alligator”.

Preparation:
Please bring a headshot and resume stapled together. Please prepare two brief (16-32 bars – up-tempo / ballad) songs from the traditional musical theatre repertoire that show you at your best OR A SONG IN THE STYLE OF THE SHOW YOU ARE WANTING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR. Please make sure that your sheet music is in the proper key and cuts are clearly marked. An accompanist will be provided. If auditioning for consideration for Carl Perkins in ATI’s MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET please bring guitar and accompany yourself for your audition.

EPA Procedures are in effect for this audition. An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Where do I park? Do I have to pay?

Where do I enter?
The auditions will take place in the rehearsal room 141 of The Studio Theater. Access to the backstage area is located through the double doors on the main level of the parking garage. Signs will be posted. If you park on a level higher that the first floor, take the elevator to the first floor, which will take you directly to the lobby of The Studio Theater. Turn left and go down the hallway towards the parking garage entrance. Exit through the glass doors and turn left. Enter through the backstage double doors and sign in with the monitor. If available, you may take the hallway to the left through the Civic Rehearsal Studios to reach the backstage area of The Studio Theater and sign in with the monitor.
