Title: Placemaker and Builder in Residence

Reports to: CEO, placemaking/build leads

Status:  1-year contract (potentially renewable depending on performance/available funds)

Timing:  May 2018-May 2019

Salary: $40,000 + living space

Position Summary

Big Car’s Placemaker and Builder in Residence assists the CEO and other full-time, ongoing Big Car staff in designing, building, and setting up pop-up public places and implementing high-quality placemaking programming at these sites.

They’re seeking an organized self-starter and solid communicator who is comfortable with project management, building things, and interacting with community members during public programming and events. Much of our work is mobile in nature, so we’re also looking for someone who is able to move trailers — or is comfortable with and confident about learning how.

The Placemaker and Builder is a key member of the creative team and follows the guidance of the project management team and works in cooperation and collaboration with the other builder or builders on the team, as well as with volunteers. The Placemaker and Builder should also be comfortable with documenting work through photography, social media, and basic written narrative.

Responsibilities

  • Help lead an artistic team to implement creative placemaking projects and events.
  • Coordinate — as a project temporary art projects for programming space; and large days of service, such as Great Indy Cleanup and Indy Do Day.
  • Build and design physical projects per the request of the Project Team
  • Help maintain Big Car sites as welcoming, functioning neighborhood cultural hubs for program and operational purposes (includes public and storage areas)
  •  Document work along the way and share it on social media on a regular basis
  • Manage particular projects and update others who may be managing projects when tasks are completed through a regular reporting system
  •  Keep an updated calendar and to-do list, noting new work requests right away
  • Track time on projects

Education and Experience

  • Can be a recent college graduate or student in progress
  • Degree or equivalent experience in community engaged art
  • Community development and program design experience

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Great communication (writing and speaking) skills
  • Creative design/build experience and skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to facilitate programming with diverse audiences, including artists and community members

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Should be able to move a trailer or be willing to learn how
