Tales of the Sea is an art exhibition revolving around aquatic life of a mythical or fantastic nature. Additional themes of aquatic ecology are encouraged, but not required. All media welcome. The exhibition is sponsored by the South Haven Center for the Arts, and co-hosted by SHCA and the South Haven Mermaid MegaFest. The Mermaid Megafest opens on May 26, 2018. Memorial Day weekend is one of South Haven’s busiest of the season and draws a large influx of visitors to the art center.

Schedule of Events:

  • Entry deadline: Entry deadline:  April 20, 2018 at 11:59pm MST
  • Notifications emailed by April 27, 2018
  • Accepted shipped work to arrive by May 12, 2018
  •  Accepted hand delivery:  Tuesday, May 8 – Saturday, May 12 during normal business hours. (Contact Kerry Hagy at SHCA to make other arrangements.)
  •  Opening reception:  Saturday, May 19, 2018
  • Pick up of accepted work:  Tuesday, July 17 – Saturday, July 21 during normal business hours (Contact Kerry Hagy at SHCA to make other arrangements.)

Exhibition:  The show runs from May 19 – July 14, 2018. The South Haven Center for the Arts will host an opening reception on May 19 to premiere the exhibition. During the weekend of the 26th South Haven will play host to Mermaid MegaFest, providing an influx of visitors, eager to view the thematically relevant show. A second opening and reception will be scheduled during Mermaid MegaFest. Artists are encouraged to attend either or both of these openings and may be invited to speak as part of an artists’ panel.

Entry Fees: There is a $30.00 entry fee for each submission. One to three artworks can be entered. Pay by credit card at time of entry through Cafe (https://www.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=5135). Make money orders or checks payable to South Haven Center for the Arts.

Submissions: Entrants must apply through callforentry.org. You will be asked for an artist statement with the submission of your work. Artwork must be original and completed in the last 3 years.

Awards:
1st Prize:  $100
2nd Prize:  $50
3rd Prize:  $25

Framing & Presentation:  Accepted works must be delivered framed and ready to hang. Frames must use wire for hanging.

Sales:  They encourage artists to make their work available for sale. This is not a requirement. The South Haven Center for the Arts’ commission is 35% of the sale price. No work will be released before the close of the exhibit.

Delivery & Pickup of Artwork:  If accepted, shipped work must include a prepaid return shipping label. Hand delivery and pickup dates/times are noted above. If someone other than the artist is picking up artwork, permission must be given by SHCA to the other party in writing.

Liability:  The South Haven Center for the Arts takes utmost care when handling artwork. SHCA carries insurance for loss or damage to artwork during the show. However, SHCA will not be responsible for loss or damage to any artwork incurred during shipping.
