The Noblesville Cultural Arts Commission announces auditions for “The Tempest”, the 2018 production of Noblesville’s Shakespeare in the Park to be held at Federal Hill Commons, July 26, 27, 28 and Aug 2, 3, & 4. Auditions will be held from 7-9 pm on May 20 and 21 at First United Methodist Church, 2051 Monument St. Noblesville IN. Please use main entrance and follow signs.

A monologue is expected from those auditioning, along with cold readings from the script. Anyone auditioning for the part of Ariel should prepare 16 measures of a song to sing.

The Tempest: Shakespeare’s final work – with Prospero, the philosophical old magician father, rightful duke of Milan and Miranda, his daughter who dwell on an enchanted island, alone except for their servants – Ariel, an invisible spirit, and Caliban, a monstrous witch’s son.

Into their idyllic but isolated lives comes a shipwrecked party that includes the enemies who usurped Prospero’s dukedom years before, and set him and his daughter adrift on the ocean. Also among the castaways is a handsome prince, the first young man Miranda has ever seen. Comedy, romance and reconciliation ensue, in a masterly drama that begins with a storm at sea and concludes in joyous harmony.

Character list:

Prospero – principal (male, age 45-60) The rightful duke of Milan. After his brother, Antonio, seized his title and property, Prospero was exiled with his daughter and eventually found refuge on an island.

Miranda – principal (female, age 20’s) Prospero’s daughter. She has been on the island with her father for 12 years — since she was 3 years old.

Ariel – principal (male or female, age?) A spirit of the air, he assists Prospero in seeking retribution over his enemies.

Caliban – principal (male 20-40) The offspring of the witch Sycorax. Half man half beast.

Antonio – (male 30-50’s) Prospero’s younger brother, who is now the duke of Milan.

Ferdinand – (male 20-30’s) The son of the king of Naples.

Alonso – (male 40-60’s) The king of Naples

Gonzalo – (male 50-70’s) An elderly counselor to Alonso

Stefano – (male 20-40’s) The king’s butler

Trinculo – (male 20-40’s) The king’s jester

Boatswain – (male age?) The ship’s petty officer
