RED BIRD CAFE REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The Tippecanoe County Public Art Team in partnership with the Tippecanoe Arts Federation is now accepting proposals for a public art project in Dayton, Indiana. The selected artist or artist team will receive $5000 for the design and creation of a mural (or series of murals) at the Red Bird Café, a commercial property located at 696 Walnut Street Dayton, IN 47941. The deadline for this opportunity is Friday, December 14, at 4:00 pm EST. Applications and additional information about the installation site can be viewed by clicking here.

The proposed design must be suitable for public display and viewing by citizens of all ages. Artists should consider the history of the Red Bird Café’s location as subject matter for proposals. The property previously served as the first gas station in Dayton, a mechanic’s garage, the town’s first fire station, and Tyrie Mower Repair. In addition to the property’s history, the restaurant’s name “Red Bird” is a reference to the community, and it is encouraged that the design incorporates this as an element in the overall aesthetic.

A successful candidate must be able to execute the artwork in two weeks or less, and the artwork must be completed no later than May 1, 2019. The selected artist or artist team must be inclusive of the Dayton community by participating in a minimum of two community workshops, talking about their artwork publicly, and should be present for the public dedication of the completed artwork. Artists must be able to independently operate an articulated lift, scissor lift, and assemble scaffolding.
