The Arts Council of Indianapolis seeks artists to incorporate original artwork onto walls provided by Jiffy Lube of Indiana, Inc. in locations around Marion County.

BUDGET:  $5,000-$12,000 per mural (five murals total)

ELIGIBILITY:  Artists over 18 and living in Indiana

DEADLINE:  January 27, 2019 11:59 p.m.

Project Description

The Arts Council of Indianapolis is partnering with Jiffy Lube of Indiana to commission 10 wall-based artworks on Jiffy Lube franchises in central Indiana between 2018 and 2019. This program will expand on an arts initiative started by Jiffy Lube, which produced three murals in 2016 and added six murals in 2018. The new artworks will serve to further Jiffy Lube’s mission of “growing people through work” as well as beautify the communities in which the stores reside and create a sense of place. For more information about the mural program, visit the project website.

For the 2019 round, five artists will be commissioned to incorporate their own original artwork onto walls provided by Jiffy Lube in locations around Marion County.

Project Locations

The tentative 2019 Jiffy Lube mural locations are:

  • #2361:  7965 US 31 South (US 31 South at Stop 11 Rd, Indianapolis)
  • #2386:  532 South SR 135 (State Rd. 135 near Smith Valley Rd., Greenwood)
  • #2458:  9825 Fall Creek Rd. (82nd St. and Fall Creek Rd., Indianapolis)
  • #3329:  10520 E. Washington St. (Washington St. between Mitthoeffer and German Church Rd., Indianapolis)
  • #3330:  7825 E. US 36 (Rockville Rd. near Dan Jones Rd., Avon)

Artwork Information

Artworks can be painted murals, or any other type of artwork that is relatively flat (projecting no more than 4-6 inches from the wall plane) and which can be attached to a wall.  Murals may be painted directly onto the wall surface or can be painted onto a panel and attached to the wall using a framework system.   Artists may choose to incorporate community involvement in the mural, or may choose to do the work themselves.  The theme does not have to focus on any aspect of Jiffy Lube’s business—theme and subject are of the artist’s choice.  To see previous murals, visit here.

Mentorship Opportunity

The 2019 round will also incorporate up to two emerging muralists as paid assistants to one of the commissioned artists, who will act as their mentor. These emerging artists must not have previously been the lead artist on a paid mural commission, are not currently pursuing an undergraduate degree, must have been working full- or part-time as an artist for one to three years, and must have mastered basic painting techniques but need additional technical guidance to be able to work professionally at mural scale. Preferred participants in this mentorship program are artists who have not participated in similar opportunities in the past, or whose life circumstances have kept them from being considered for mural work. The pay will be $15 per hour for approximately 100 hours of work over the course of four to six months. For more information, or to suggest yourself or someone else as a participant, please contact Julia Moore at (317) 631-3301 x240 or by email at jmoore@indyarts.org .

Compensation

Commissions will range from $5,000 to $12,000 for walls ranging in size from 250 to 600 square feet.  Commissions are inclusive of design, travel, artists’ fees (including an extra $500 stipend if the artist is serving as a mentor to an emerging artist), materials, labor, insurance coverage, and all associated costs relating to the design and production of wall-based artwork. Jiffy Lube will ensure that the site is adequately prepared for the artist prior to installation of the artwork.
