Texas State University invites professional artists or artist teams to submit qualifications to design and fabricate two-dimensional or three-dimensional artwork for the interior of the LBJ Student Center expansion at its San Marcos, TX campus. Multiple artists and types of artwork will be considered, including large-scale installations and works in a series.

Project Description
Artwork themes for this project will be centered around inclusivity, diversity, engagement and building community. Texas State University LBJ Student Center Expansion features 4 opportunities for interior artwork in key public areas and will be awarded to multiple qualified artists. Art + Artisans Consulting is handling the call for qualifications and will manage the design collaboration up through installation of all artwork. Artists will work with Art + Artisans Consulting to finalize design concepts for the project. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors should feel engaged upon viewing artwork. Artwork will be harmonious with the diverse cultures at home at Texas State University. Artwork must be suitable for indoor conditions as well as interaction with the general public and have the capacity to be securely installed in a public area. The work should be prominent and proportional to its surroundings and must be durable, sustainable and easy to maintain.

Texas State University is a public, student-centered, emerging research university dedicated to excellence in serving the educational needs of a diverse population of Texas and the world beyond.
Texas State University System Board of Regents allocates one percent (1%) of the construction budget of each new major construction project to its Public Art Program. These works of public art shall be located at or near the site of the construction project. Works of public art are to be separate from and in addition to the aesthetic features incorporated into the building itself. The Public Art Committee seeks works by professional artists to add to and integrate with the campus and its growing collection of public art.

Site History
Texas State University is built on the hills above San Marcos, TX. It is characterized by the expansive use of brick and stone, and dozens of buildings are joined together by stairways, ramps, and terraces. The campus also includes the headwaters of the stunningly clear and cold spring fed San Marcos River. The area’s visually striking geology and ecology are unique to this part of Texas. The river is located mere steps from the LBJ Student Center. The expansion includes a new main entry lobby, a new ballroom, conference rooms, meeting spaces, shared spaces for informal student gatherings and study, a multi-cultural area, and improved circulation and traffic flow within the expansion and adjacent renovated areas. The expansion and renovation include the Welcome Center suite and the creation of an Alumni Relations office suite.

Selection Process
Submissions by applicants will be reviewed by Art + Artisans Consulting to ensure that each application is legible, complete and meets all requirements. The pool will then be reviewed by the Texas State University Public Art committee who will select a shortlist of artists to invite to submit proposals for works of art to be incorporated into the design of the new building project. Invited applicants will be paid a stipend of $1,500 to develop and present a formal proposal to the Public Art committee. The stipend covers the costs of the artist’s time, materials, and travel expenses.
