Family Winter Residency – 2019/20

Deadline: June 25, 2019, midnight

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Wassaic Project recognizes that artists who have families often opt-out of peer community building for practical reasons: residencies don’t often take children, events happen late at night, childcare is expensive.  Bowie, Jeff and Eve (Wassaic co-founders) have kids; they’re all artists. They have families that they want to be with and not away from. And they ALSO want to connect with other artist peer groups and build community.  While they can’t solve all these problems at once (yet!), they have solved the first one: they now offer Family Residencies from November – March from 1 to 8 weeks in length.

HOW TO APPLY:

They accept proposals for 1 to 8 weeks from November 2019 through March 2020, and will work with each family to accommodate their specific needs.  Each Family will be provided with a private house complete with a kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom, and three bedrooms.

REVIEW PROCESS

Residents are selected by a review committee composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, Residency Director, and professionals in their field. Artists and writers will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

STUDIOS + HOUSING:

Their winter studios are located in the first and second floors of the Old Hotel in Maxon Mills.  Residents will receive an adaptable raw studio that is roughly 100 square feet. Artists will have 24 hour access to their studio.  Artists also have access to the residency’s woodshop, located on the first floor of Maxon Mills. They also have the possibility to expand on large scale projects within the seven floors of Maxon Mills.

Residents are required to bring everything they need for their creative practice. Each studio is provided with a table, chair and limited lighting. We do not provide any art materials.

The Wassaic House Hotel, built in the 1850s by Noah Gridley of Noah Gridley and Son Ironworks, was a direct product of the railroad and functioned as a leisure location where upper class railroad passengers could rest, dine, and socialize. The hotel abuts the Maxon Mills and now serves as the winter residency studio space.

FEES:

In an effort to serve and support emerging artists, they are able to subsidize residencies for all individual artists who do not have other forms of support. Thanks to the generous support of donors and grants, the fee for the Family residency is $900 per month. They are open to shorter stays at a prorated rate.

They are, however, able to offer up to $300 in need-based (as self-reported in their applications) financial assistance to residents for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. The intention is for financial assistance to be given to artists for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. If that is not the case for you. Financial assistance is provided to reduce financial hardship; the allocation is not based on merit.

Accepted artists will pay their first month’s residency fee + $1000 security deposit upon signing their artist contract. Subsequent fees are due at the first of each month. There are no refunds.

PROGRAMMING

Two to three times per month, creative professionals will visit to give public lectures and make one-on-one studio visits with creative professionals our residents. Their embedded critics, Adam Eckstrom and Lauren Was (of Ghost of a Dream), will lead group studio visits.

All artists are also invited to participate in a monthly evening of artist’s talks and presentations, and are encouraged to be available on the last Saturday of every month to participate in the Open Studios program.
