The Florida Legislature has passed legislation calling for the creation and installation of a Slavery Memorial to be placed on the Capitol Plaza. The Slavery Memorial Review Committee is tasked with selecting three Finalists who will be asked to research, design and create proposals for an artwork/environment that will recognize the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the American colonies and to honor the nameless and forgotten men, women, and children who have gone unrecognized for their undeniable and weighty contributions to the United States.

Budget: $400,000
Eligibility: (none specified)
Deadline: 08/02/2019 9:00 PM Central Time

Artwork Location Description
The Slavery Memorial is slated to be installed in Tallahassee, FL, on the newly completed South Plaza of the State Capitol. This a prominent, public space that will receive many statewide, national, and international visitors. The memorial must be fabricated of materials appropriate for continued outdoor placement in the heat and humidity of north Florida. The selected Finalists will be given more detailed information about the site, load limitations, engineering requirements, etc.

Selection Process
The selection process for this project will reflect national standards and best practices of the field of public art. The Committee consists of the Administrator/Chair (non-voting), an Architect, a Visual Artist, a representative from the state agency that manages the state capitol, and two members from the constituent community. The Review Meeting will be open to the public in accordance with Florida’s “Government in the Sunshine Law” (see section 286.011, Florida Statutes). After an initial ranking of the submissions, the Committee will participate in rounds of review, discussion and elimination, until they agree on three Finalists. These Finalists will be provided further information about the project site to aide in their research, design, and proposal creation.  Each Finalist will receive a stipend of $3,000 to fund expenses associated with preparing and presenting their proposal.
