Project Description
Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) is building a new terminal and multi-modal transportation complex at Pittsburgh International Airport. The result of the Terminal Modernization Program (TMP) will be an improved passenger experience and better sense of the culture and amenities of the Pittsburgh region. The design team for the parking facility and terminal connection include engineers and architects from the Gensler+HDR JV in association with luis vidal architects and Michael Baker, Inc.; Members of the team have experience collaborating with artists on public art commissions. The project team includes members of the design team, ACAA’s Arts and Culture Manager, other ACAA staff, and the design team’s public art consultant. The Art in the Airport Program plans to expand with the TMP, including new permanent commissions and places for temporary art and performances.
The project coordinators are seeking an artist to collaborate with the design team and the construction management team to make the experience memorable and interesting, using the overall TMP themes of Nature, Technology, and Community as a launching point. The artist and design team will develop a concept for an integrated artwork that will elevate the pedestrian and vehicular experience of the Terminal Roadways and Bridges. At this time, ACAA and design team intend that the integrated art project will be implemented by the TMP’s general contractor, although some elements may be fabricated by outside contractors or the artist. This will be determined as part of the design process for the integrated artwork. Once the design is approved by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, it will be integrated into the bid documents.
The artist, design team, and the Art in the Airport program will collaborate to identify the ongoing role of the artist from construction documents through the implementation of the project (Phase 2). A separate contract and fee for those services will be negotiated for Phase 2. These services may include, but are not limited to further design development, review of shop drawings, fabrication, supervision of installation of design enhancements, and inspection and approval of design enhancements.
During the design phase, the artist will:
