Faith, Justice & the Arts (FJA), an initiative of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, uses the arts to create experiences that raise awareness about issues of injustice, and lead to faithful and transformative engagement in
the community. The FJA committee is accepting 2019 grant applications for original works that intersect art and faith, created through music, dance, theater, literature, visual arts and/or other media.

GRANT AMOUNT: $30,000 total (no specific number of grantees indicated)

St. Paul’s initiative for Faith, Justice & the Arts (FJA) was created to fulfill the promise of our Baptismal Covenant to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being. To achieve this, we will use the arts to create community-wide experiences and conversations that raise awareness about issues of injustice and lead to faithful and transformative engagement in the community.

The Faith, Justice & the Arts committee uses diverse artistic collaborations to awaken inspire and empower communities to strive for justice and peace among all peoples.

General Submission Criteria
Artists who receive an Artist Grant from FJA are expected to create a work which will impact both the community of St. Paul’s Indy and the Indianapolis community at large within the time frame of the grant. Recipients are also expected to take part in at least one St. Paul’s educational forum to introduce their work.

The work can be created through music, dance, theater, literature, visual arts, and/or other media. Funds can be used for materials, instruction, workshops, studio or rehearsal space, installation, and artist support. Artists can be at any point in their careers. Consideration may also be given to groups such as student groups, support groups, patient groups, to create group projects.

2019 Grant Amount
A grant in the amount of up to $30,000 will be awarded in December 2019. Payment will be made in two installments: 50% of the requested amount at the time of award, and the remainder upon completion of the project. The grant recipient will be required to submit an IRS W-9 form so that an IRS 1099 income statement can be issued by St. Paul’s for the artist’s tax records. All taxes and reporting of taxes will be the responsibility of the grant recipient.

Grant Funding
Funds may be used for travel, housing, and/or the equipment necessary to conduct proposed activities. Funds may also be used for materials necessary to create artwork in preparation for an exhibition or performance. Artists will be responsible for making all arrangements and/or purchases for their activities.

• Funds cannot be used for tuition or fees at any college, university, or degree-granting institution.
• Funds cannot be re-granted or redistributed to any other person, organization, or entity.
• Funds cannot be used for debt reduction, debt elimination, student loans, penalties, or litigation costs.

Work on the project may be completed anywhere, so long as an artifact or performance is made accessible to the St. Paul’s community shortly after the work is completed.

Evaluation Process & Selection Criteria
The Faith, Justice & the Arts Committee members make their decisions based on the application materials, work samples, attachments, and documentation.

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following:

• Proposal’s relationship to the intersection of faith, and
• Feasibility of the proposed project, including timeline, budget, and scope of activities

The committee may choose to consult an expert on an applicant’s proposed media. Finalists may be interviewed by the committee prior to final selection.

Publicity Permissions
The artist must agree to provide a headshot or other appropriate photograph of as well as images, music and/or video samples of work completed during the grant experience, and any other documentation of their artistic activities for publicity purposes, use on St. Paul’s website, and archiving in St. Paul’s art database. St. Paul’s reserves the right to use selected images or products generated from fellowship activities for use in documentation and publication for Faith, Justice & the Arts.

Meetings
The artist is required to participate in a series of meetings convened by FJA throughout the grant period.

6. What is your faith perspective both personally and for this work?
7. Provide a copy of the budget for the project.
8. Provide links to at least three picture, video or audio files from your portfolio which could be related in some way to the work proposed for this grant.
