The Center for Art and Social Engagement (CASE) and Project Row Houses (PRH) have created a fellowship program that invites artists and cultural practitioners to Houston’s Third Ward to work alongside urban planners, educators and policy makers. The fellows will engage in creative collaborations that involve the Third Ward community and address issues important to them. Two fellows will be selected.

FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT:  $15,000 plus $5,000 project/research funding, free housing at PRH, and up to $3,500 local travel support

About the Fellowship

Fellows will have a year-long mentorship with Ryan N. Dennis, PRH’s Curator and Programs Director and Sixto Wagan, director of CASE in the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts at University of Houston. Engagements with PRH co-founders and other local leaders will be an ongoing part of the process. Local artists, faculty members, community members and selected leaders will offer their support during this process. The Fellows will present to the public their research–to-date at the end of their fellowship.

Benefits of the program include a community Brain Trust of local artists, community members, and faculty to advise and ground the project in a local discourse. In return, the fellows are asked to engage our communities – Third Ward, university, artistic, and myriad other – in a process that involves:

• a public presentation of previous work and Fellowship guiding questions at the beginning of the Fellowship,
• present a public talk/project at the end of residency
• co-organizing a Community Conversation with program directors
• monthly meetings with the program directors

What to Submit

1. Resume/CV (no more than 2 pages)
2. Work Samples: 3-5 samples of your previous work. Samples may include images (10mb limit per file), videos (link to 5-7 minute excerpt), or excerpts of written works (not exceeding 800 words).
3. Recommendation letter: Application must include a recommendation letter from an artist, community member, mentor, or colleague to that can support your application. The letter should speak to the applicant’s creative history; work in communities; and, the potential impact of the fellowship on the applicant or the applicant’s potential impact on our communities. (Applicant will need to submit the email of recommender, and recommender will submit the letter directly.)
4. Narrative: a short (no more than 2 pages) narrative for the upcoming year that answers: What are the guiding questions for your work in this fellowship? What would this fellowship with UH & PRH allow for that you have not yet investigated/achieved? Please address these ideas:
   How does this investigation build upon your history of community engagement?
   How will the fellowship contribute to the development of your creative career?
   What are your leadership strengths, and how will the fellowship either complement or enhance those strengths?
   In what ways can the university community support/enhance your creative investigation?
   In what ways can PRH support your ongoing practice in the field?
5. For non-Houston residents: Propose an ideal timeline for your fellowship. Would you move to Houston for the entire year, stay for multiple months at a time, or conduct consistent week-long visits? Please clarify how your proposed timeline manages the practicalities of your existing commitments and the fellowship stipend and travel budget. We will take in consideration your commitments and the needs of our communities.
