Since 1999, White River State Park has sponsored an outdoor sculpture program that has proven to be very successful and popular with visitors.

They are now seeking entrants for the 2020 – 2023 Sculpture in the Park exhibition. They will be selecting up to two sculptures this year to join the other works on the Old Washington Street Bridge. Because of budget restraints they are staggering the removal of the pieces, so all
the sculptures are not changed out at the same time. The length of time each piece is exhibited is 3 years. The White River State Park Commission will pay the artist a $5000 honorarium. In addition, the Park will pay up to a maximum of $5000 to help offset the actual costs of transporting the sculpture to and from Indianapolis (as long as mileage and receipts are provided), as well as installation and removal of the piece from the Park.

  • Sculptures will be displayed for three years beginning in April of 2020
  • The honorarium is $5,000 plus up to a maximum of $5,000 to help offset the costs of transportation, installation, and removal of the piece (mileage and receipts must be submitted for reimbursement)
  • Entries must be postmarked (or preferably emailed) by Friday, December 20, 2019
  • Winners will be notified by January 31, 2020.
  • Sculptures must be delivered and installed in White River State Park by Friday, April 24, 2020.

Below is additional information about the sculpture program. For additional information about the Park and the attractions located here, visit their website at www.WhiteRiverStatePark.org. Please take time to read the following information and feel free to email if you have questions or want to know more about the sculpture program.

Public Sculpture Exhibition

White River State Park is pleased to announce that it will continue to support an outdoor public art program. The primary purpose of this exhibition is to enhance the artistic and cultural opportunities within the State and region. It is our hope that residents and visitors to Indiana’s capital city will appreciate and become engaged in the visual dialogue of these contemporary sculptures. The program is open to any sculptor in Indiana or the Midwest. The Commission will pay up to a maximum of $5000 to help with transporting the sculpture to and from Indianapolis (mileage and receipts must be provided) as well as installation and removal of the piece in the Park. In addition, the Park will pay an honorarium of $5000.

The Park will continue to display at least six, large-scale exterior sculptures reflecting diversity of materials, approaches and content on the Old Washington Street Bridge (now a pedestrian walkway connecting venues on the east and west banks of the river) in White River State Park. Rather than replace all of the sculptures every three years, they only change out one or two sculptures each year. Each work is displayed for three years. The work must be constructed of materials able to endure the conditions of an outdoor exhibition. The
sculptures must be suitable for public display and not present safety issues.

The Park is the only urban cultural state park in the country and is located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The New York Times has referred to the Park as “Indianapolis’ version of the Mall in Washington.” In addition to acres of green spaces, the Park is home to six major tourist attractions and an outdoor amphitheater. Over four million people visit the Park each year.

The Site
Sculptures will be located along the Old Washington Street Bridge, a pedestrian walkway that overlooks the White River, in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Please visit www.WhiteRiverStatePark.org (click on “Visit”, then “Art in the Park”) for examples of artwork

The Park will provide assistance for installation and dismantling. White River State Park carries property/physical limited insurance on the sculptures only; however, you must also insure the sculpture for any damage that may be incurred by weather or other acts of God.
