About the Job:
This employee serves as Indiana State Museum TC Steele Historical Site. You as the Site Manager for Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites will be responsible for all facets of site management including, but not limited to: public and school programming, site interpretation, visitor service relations, community relations, interaction with traditional and social media, budget management, employee management, volunteer recruitment, developed revenue, historic research, identify capital needs for the site including restoration of historic structures, work with the collections team on implementing collections care and management, seeking and delivering public speaking engagements. You will be required to work collaboratively within the system utilizing all resources and expertise available to them.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Planning Priorities and Historic Site Goals
    • Includes long range planning for the historic sites within the system, creating annual prioritized objectives and action plans, determine staffing, equipment, operating, preventive maintenance and capital biennium budget requests.
    • Budget Control, Purchasing and Administrative Duties
    • Develop and implement operations budget
    • Collaborate with the Facilities and Historic Restoration division on identifying and meeting capital expenditures
    • Responsible for the implementation of operating policies and procedures including working with the system resources required reports, money collection documentation, fiscal reports, payroll documents, monthly reports, attendance. These reports require accuracy and accountability.
  • Site Management
    • Responsible for the day to day operations of the site including processing documentation, recruitment, hiring and training of full and part time staff, supervision of grounds maintenance and presentation of the oversight of public programs.
  • Personnel Supervision
    • Responsible for work planning and assignment of all Site human resources.
    • Responsible for hiring, managing and evaluating all full time staff.
    • Responsible for training employees to properly complete all assigned tasks.
  • Programming and Interpretation
    • Oversees the Site Programmer in the development and presentation of programs, tours and special events to visitors on the Sites as well as special programs to schools and other interested groups.
    • Assists Site Programmer in the training and evaluation of Site tour guides for the site
    • Accountable for resolving visitor problems and complaints.
  • Restoration and Site Maintenance
    • Includes identifying in collaboration with historic preservation and facilities any necessary building restoration, repair and new construction, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology and the DNR Division of Engineering.
    • Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of historic site buildings, grounds and equipment.
    • May include mowing, cleaning, painting, structural and mechanical repairs and many other duties.
  • Artifact Collections Care
    • Responsible for the care, handling, accountability and transportation of numerous irreplaceable historic artifacts and specimens belonging to the ISMHS system and borrowed from other public institutions and private individuals.  Includes the cleaning, storage, inventory, display and security of such artifacts and specimens.
    • Must be aware of and follow all Indiana State Museum Collections Policy edicts and inventory report requirements.
  • Community and Support Organizations
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining community relations
    • Responsible for working with the Development Office to identify and implement grants, corporate and general operational supplemental support for the site

What They’re Looking For:

  • Master’s degree in recommended in appropriate fields such as nonprofit management, museum studied or business.
  • Five (5) years of related management experience in a visitor centric environment this includes children’s museums, science centers, art museum, historic sites and history museums is required

What You’ll Need for Success:

  • Be familiar with American Association of Museum standards related to the care and accountability of historic artifacts and specimens.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of institutional system-wide procedures pertaining to fiscal control, purchasing and personnel management.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of State and Federal laws and procedures pertaining to historic sites.
  • Be willing to travel away from home office regularly for overnight requirements as they present themselves.
  • Be able to organize an event presentation and demonstrate abilities as a public speaker.
  • Have strong interpersonal and interpersonal skills and the ability to solve problems and to negotiate. Strong writing skills.
  • Have computer skills in:  Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and capacity to learn other programs.
  • Serve as the content expert and resource of historic aspects of the site.
  • Be able to supervise other people in a fair and professional manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

  • This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
