The College of Health and Human Services is located at the corner of Chestnut and 4th Street in Terre Haute, Indiana.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) seeks an artist to provide a work of art for the CHHS building on the West side of Indiana State University (ISU). The final work will exemplify the focus of the college on the health and wellbeing of humankind and will engage the public, students, faculty and staff. Art that encourages interaction and dialogue will best serve the goals of this project.

The College of Health and Human Services is committed to providing for the ISU and Terre Haute communities a completed work of art that is durable and will appeal to a broad constituency including students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as city residents and visitors. Artists are encouraged to submit images of past works and preliminary concepts for this space that will demonstrate their ability to create a meaningful, unique, and exciting work of art. Members of the selection committee will view most favorably those submissions that indicate that the artist has reviewed all of the information available and offers evidence of their ability to create artwork with an appealing concept fabricated of suitable materials.

ARTWORK LOCATION DESCRIPTION

The sculpture will be located indoors in or around the grand staircase on the West side of the Health and Human Services building. The College of Health and Human Services is located at the corner of Chestnut and 4th Street in Terre Haute, Indiana. Visitors, students, faculty and staff will regularly encounter the work. The building is located near the West Entrance of the campus, which is the main public entrance of CHHS, and will be highly trafficked by students and faculty coming from parking areas west of the campus. Selected finalists will have an opportunity to visit ISU to view the building and present full proposals and the selected artist will continue to be a part of the exact site selection.

TIMELINE

• Online Account Created: by February 3, 2020
• Qualifications and Preliminary Concepts Due: February 21, 2020
• Finalists’ Campus Visit: between March 23 – April 3, 2020
• Final Proposal Submission: May 3, 2020
• Finalists Notified: week of May 8, 2020
• Anticipated Installation: September 2020

SELECTION PROCESS

The Selection Committee for this project includes administrators and students of the College of Health and Human Services and Indiana State University, representatives from the ISU Foundation, and The ISU Curator of Permanent Collections. The Selection Committee will select up to three artists from the submitted applications as finalists to visit campus between March 23 and April 3, 2020. Following the campus visit finalists will be asked to submit the following items:

• A physical or electronic model/maquette of the proposed artwork. Finalists will receive a $500.00 stipend toward their time, effort, and materials to create the model/maquette.
• Estimated Budget not to exceed one page. The artist’s total budget for this project shall not exceed $85,000.00 and is all-inclusive. Please describe the estimated costs for research, design, materials, fabrication, travel, transportation, engineering of the sculpture and its support and anchoring mechanism/structure, insurance, taxes, and any other expenses related to the project not listed as the responsibility of ISU.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Up to three artists will advance to the finalist stage based on artistic merit, quality and fit of a preliminary concept with the CHHS mission, demonstrated experience, references, ability to work within the stated budget and ability to meet the timeline.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

For full consideration, please upload the following files with your name on the file.

1. Letter of interest not to exceed one page describing your interest in this project, why your work would be appropriate for this project, and whether you can meet the goals and the timeline of the project within the proposed budget. Please make certain your name, address, e-mail address and phone number are included on your letter.
2. Preliminary Concepts for Artwork not to exceed three pages (this limit includes any drawings or other informational material). Please describe your preliminary ideas for the artwork including conception, fit with the mission of the College of Health and Human Services, potential materials and methods, and suggested timeline from fabrication to installation. Note that the artwork must fit within the existing architectural design and specifications of the building.
3. Resume or Curriculum Vitae. If you are submitting as a team, please submit a resume for each member of the team.
4. Up to Ten digital images titled as follows: Last Name, Image Number, and Artwork Title. Images should portray past work that assists the committee to understand the quality, breadth, and depth of the artist’s work and how it qualifies you for this particular project. Please upload high-resolution jpeg images only.
5. Image List that includes Image Number, Title, Dimensions, Materials, Year and Cost.
6. List of three references with their current contact information, including phone numbers and e-mail address. Greatest weight is given to references for public art projects.
