The City of Rockville, MD is seeking a professional public artist to create a site-specific work of art. The purpose of this artwork is to beautify the recently renovated Rockville Swim and Fitness Center.

BUDGET: $100,000

About Rockville

Rockville, Maryland is located less than 15 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. Rockville is the seat of government for Montgomery County and is considered one of the nation’s leading small cities, and frequently recognized as one of the best places to live in the nation. Our community is one of the most diverse and international in the world, with more than one-third of our residents having been born outside of the United States. Rockville has a rich history going back 250 years and was the first municipality in Montgomery County, Maryland to initiate a percent for public art program.

About the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center

Rockville Swim and Fitness Center is a great place for the public to swim and stay in shape year-round. This center offers three outdoor swimming pools, two indoor swimming pools, hot tub, sauna and a fully equipped fitness center.

Artwork Goals

The public artwork should seek to engage its audience and welcome visitors in a fun and unforgettable manner. Suggested themes could reflect the importance of water, nature, and/or movement (by virtue of a kinetic component). The artwork will be visible both during the day and in the evening.

Artwork Site Description

The suggested locations for the artwork are:

  • the green space adjacent to the entrance of the circular driveway,
  • the vestibule of the main entrance to the center,
  • the exterior façade of the building.

Finalists can choose one or more than one location.

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: Friday, May 29, 2020
  • Finalists Announcement: Friday, June 5, 2020
  • Presentation of Proposals to Artist Nomination Committee by Finalists: Week of August 3, 2020

The City of Rockville reserves the right to adjust this timetable as required during this Call to Artists submission process.

Selection Process

  • Artist submits materials of previous work for review.
  • Artist Nomination Committee reviews applicants’ portfolios and selects finalists.
  • Selection of three finalists based on each artist’s portfolio is anticipated.
  • Finalists will be provided more detailed information on the project and a $1,000 stipend to develop a site-specific proposal.
  • Site-specific proposals are presented to the Artist Nomination Committee. The city will provide travel fees to present proposals. More information will be provided to the three finalists at the time of their selection.
  • Artist Nomination Committee develops a recommendation for selection of one artist.
  • The Cultural Arts Commission is presented the recommended site-specific proposal and makes an independent recommendation.
  • Recommendations from the Artist Nomination Committee and the Cultural Arts Commission are presented to the City of Rockville Mayor and Council for consideration and final award of the public art commission. NOTE: The selection of an artist’s design proposal is wholly within the discretion of the Mayor and Council of Rockville. The City of
    Rockville reserves the right to accept or reject any or all of the proposals for any or no reason and is under no obligation to commission a work of art from any submitted proposal.
  • Selected artist is contracted through the City of Rockville.

What to Submit

  • Application form
  • Five digital images along with media, location and year created for each work of art, a bio/CV, and brief artist statement.
  • A list of no more than three recent public art commissions, and a reference/contact person and their phone number for each project.

All materials will be submitted online. Hand-delivered or mailed submissions will NOT be accepted.
