The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee, the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, and the Hebei Provincial People’s Government are jointly soliciting works of public art (mainly in the form of sculpture) for the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Project Description

Urban sculpture is an important cultural element of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics (hereinafter referred to as the Beijing Winter Olympics), and is an important carrier to spread the Beijing Winter Olympics concept and show the fusion of Chinese culture and technology. The organizer warmly welcomes natural persons, legal persons and other organizations (hereinafter collectively referred to as applicants) who are willing to participate in the design of urban sculptures to actively participate in this solicitation activity and contribute wisdom and strength to the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Organizers also strive to make the global solicitation a bridge between artists and international art platforms with an international perspective and thinking.

Artwork Goals

Artists from all over the world are sought to embody the concept of the Winter Olympics in artistic language.The public art works solicitation is mainly in the form of sculpture, advocating the design of novel modeling and application of new material technology.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games is themed “pure snow, passionate dating” and upholds the concepts of “green, sharing, openness, and integrity,”, “let the Olympics light up the dreams of youth, and integrate winter sports into hundreds of millions,” “let the Olympic Games benefit development and progress, and make the world more familiar with each other,” and advocate the consciousness of “community of human destiny.” Applicants should create around the theme of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, embody the Olympic spirit, integrate the wisdom of the Winter Olympics and promote the splendid culture of the Chinese nation.

The artistic style, form, material, specifications, expression techniques and techniques of the application plan are not limited.

Selection Process

After October 15, 2020, the organizing committee will invite experts and judges to select 100 shortlisted awards and 20 nominated awards. The 20 nominated awards will be produced in formal samples for public display, and the 10 best solutions will be voted for online by the public. Each of the 20 nominated awards will receive RMB 50,000 (approximately $7,000 USD) to produce and ship a 100-150 cm model for the competition.

The 10 best plans selected from the event will be permanently placed in prominent positions at the national speed skating hall, the main entrance square of Yanqing competition area, and the Zhangjiakou award plaza, which, together with the competition venues, will form an important cultural heritage of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Each selected plan will receive a commission of RMB 200,000 (approximately $28,000 USD) after taxes.  This is a fee to allow the Organizing Committee to produce the sculpture at full scale. No production is required from the artists.
