Sasaki, on behalf of the Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance (DCAMM) of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and MassBay Community College (MBCC), invites artists to submit conceptual proposals for transformative public artwork to complement and to highlight the MBCC Health Sciences Center building planned for 89 Mt. Wayte Avenue in Framingham, MA.

BUDGET: $200,000

ELIGIBILITY: Self-identified artists age 18 or over. Local Boston/Framingham area artists, female artists, and artists of color are especially encouraged to apply.

By seeking an artist at the Design Development stage, we hope the conceptualization and execution of a public art intervention will be closely aligned with the Project’s architectural, landscape, sustainability, and urban design goals. The selected artist will work with the design team during the Design Development and Construction Documents stages. We look forward to artwork that will highlight the renewed presence of MBCC in Framingham while reinforcing its educational mission and programs.

Unlike most community college campuses shielded by expansive surface parking lots or deeply set-back from access roads with landscape buffers, the future building on a corner site will have a direct relationship with both Mt. Wayte Avenue and Franklin Street. The Project has an opportunity to leverage the proposed building and landscape into transforming the public realm along its street frontage—one that could become a shared outdoor amenity for MBCC and the Framingham community, while acting as a buffer between busy streets and the quieter spaces of learning and study within the building.

A successful submission will highlight themes of relevance to the MBCC and Framingham communities such as the power of higher education and scholarship, medical and health sciences topics, cultural diversity, and potential stories related to the site’s history, etc.
