Great Encounters
Most jazz musicians have met someone who inspired them to action – to listen more, to practice their instrument more, and to pursue a career in music. Sometimes these experiences are comical, sometimes embarrassing or hurtful to one’s pride, but most times these encounters are awe-inspiring moments that motivate artists to be as great as their musical mentors. This discussion focuses on three artists whose stories explain the extraordinary beginnings of their great genius: Ben Webster, Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie.
