Artistic Activism Workshop

Artistic Activism Workshop

Presented by Herron Galleries at Herron School of Art and Design

The exhibit features the work of Free the Vaccine for COVID-19, an international collective of artists and access-to-medicines advocates dedicated to ensuring that COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines are widely available and affordable worldwide.

Led by Free the Vaccine for COVID-19 members Joseph Amodei and Laura Holzman, this workshop will introduce the collective’s methods and offer concrete techniques to help you expand your creative toolkit and strengthen your advocacy skills.

Whether you’re an artist, an activist, or none of the above, this workshop will provide you with tools to advocate for change in a more creative, sustainable and effective way.

This event is free and open to the public and will take place via Zoom from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. Preregister online in advance.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Laura Holzman is Associate Professor and Public Scholar of Curatorial Practices and Visual Art at IUPUI. Her work activates art, its history, and its institutions to strengthen communities, expand democratic discourse, and promote equity.

Joseph Amodei (they/them) is a new media artist, theater designer, educator, and activist. Joseph conceives of art as a powerful epistemic and emotional tool for examining assumed realities. Their work combines innovative technology, extensive research, and hope for alternate futures to invite audiences into a communal process of debriefing and re-learning. Joseph grew up in North Carolina, where they received a BFA in Studio Art from UNC-Chapel Hill. Joseph completed their MFA in Video and Media Design at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama. Currently, they are a professor of Immersive Media at Chatham University in Pittsburgh.
