Curious Phenomena

Curious Phenomena

Presented by Fountain Square Clay Center at Fountain Square Clay Center

Curious Phenomena prompts the viewer to step into the unknown. Mysteries abound in these ceramic vessels and sculptures. This work playfully questions our belief systems, explores alternate histories, and dissects familiar myths and fables.

Rachel Bleil uses sgraffito to depict scenes of growth, change and adaptation with hybrid characters resembling teddy bears. The carved sgraffito lines evoke feelings using subtle variation in width and depth, defining forms and leaving behind a tactile surface texture.

Andrew Perry Davis (cavemouseceramics.com) explores the mechanisms that produce what we call happiness in this new body of work. Elements that at first seem to be contradictory prompt the viewer to play with their own references and interpretations. Artifacts and antique toys inspire many of the forms he sculpts. Inspiration often comes from studying how something is put together or how the surface is wearing off.

The show will be up October 1st through 29th. Join the artists for a reception Friday, October 1st from 6-9 pm at Fountain Square Clay Center.
