Elements of Fiction: Plot, Structure, & Setting
Instructor: John F. Allen

This course will explore the basic elements of plot and structure, how they differ, how they relate and why they’re vital to good storytelling. We will also discuss how detailed description and setting are integral to plot, character development and world building. We will develop the use of sensory perception within description as it relates to setting. This class is for all levels of fiction writers whether you’re just starting out or needing a refresher.

Elements of Fiction:Character Development, Worldbuilding, Exposition, and Dialogue

This course will explore various approaches and techniques to developing believable and engaging characters, set within a fictional world. The instructor will provide insight into worldbuilding and how a world can become a character on its own. This course will also provide insight into why dialogue and exposition are so important, what’s the difference, when to use them, where to use them and why. This class is for all levels of fiction writers whether you’re just starting out or needing a refresher.

Elements of Fiction:Emotions, Viewpoint, and Voice

This course will provide the writer with techniques to convey emotions in their work, the importance of viewpoint, why choosing the correct one is vitally important and a clear definition of voice and how to develop their own. This class is for all levels of fiction writers whether you’re just starting out or needing a refresher.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
John F. Allen is an American writer born in Indianapolis, IN. He is a founding member of the Speculative Fiction Guild and a member of the Indiana Writers Center. John began writing stories as early as the second grade and pursued various forms of writing at some point, throughout his career. He studied Liberal Arts at IUPUI with a focus in Creative Writing, received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force and is a current member of the American Legion. John’s debut novel, The God Killers, was published in 2013 by Seventh Star Press, and he has since had numerous novellas and short stories published by various publishers. He is currently working on multiple novel, novella and short story projects, as well as a book of poetry. John is also a freelance copywriter. John currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
