Short Fiction Writing Workshop

Short Fiction Writing Workshop

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Zoom

Dates: 4 Wednesdays: November 10, 17, December 01, 08 2021
Time: 6:00 pm-9:00 pm
Location: Zoom

Using short tales by American writers published after 1990, this course will focus on the technique of the short story – its complexity, limits, problems, and possibilities.

We will examine the core characteristics of short fiction, such as character development, setting, dialogue, and pacing, in this course open to individuals who have written some short fiction as well as those who have never written any.

Students will submit original stories for the rest of the class to read and workshop. We’ll approach each story as an inquiry, peering behind the hood to map and explain how the equipment works. Simultaneously, I encourage a workshop that focuses less on interpretation and more on the story’s experience and impact.

**The cost of this class includes a $25 critiquing fee, to be remitted by IWC directly to the instructor, for work critiqued outside of class time.

Allison Whittenberg is a Philadelphia native who has a global perspective. If she wasn’t an author she’d be a private detective or a jazz singer. She loves reading about history and true crime. Her novels include Sweet Thang, Hollywood and Maine, Life is Fine, Tutored, and The Sane Asylum. Her short story collection The Carnival of Reality will be released March 2022.
