Grand Encounters: Michelle Cann

Grand Encounters: Michelle Cann

Presented by American Pianists Association at Indiana Landmarks Center

Our season concludes with a concert by Michelle Cann, noted champion of the music of Florence Price. Price is considered the first recognized African‐American female composer with over 300 works to her credit. Cann performed the New York City premiere of the composer’s Concerto in One Movement with The Dream Unfinished Orchestra in July 2016 and the Philadelphia premiere with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet‐Séguin in February 2021, which the Philadelphia Inquirer called “exquisite.” On May 15 (Indiana History Center), she will perform Price’s “Fantasie Nègre No. 1 in E minor” as well as “Troubled Water” by Price’s contemporary Margaret Bonds in a program also including works by Chopin and Brahms.
