Every spring, Indiana Landmarks names the recipient for the Cook Cup Award for Outstanding Restoration. In 2021, that honor went to the P.R. Mallory Complex at 3029 East Washington Street in Indianapolis.
Indiana Landmarks and Storytelling Arts of Indiana have commissioned storyteller David Matlack of Bloomington to create and premiere a story about the historic factory for the “If These Walls Could Tell” series, sponsored by Frank and Katrina Basile.
The complex once served as a manufacturing center where electronics were produced from 1929-1979, most notably, the Mallory dry cell battery, known today by the brand name Duracell. Seeing the structure as a potential catalyst for change in the neighborhood, leaders from the Englewood Community Development Corp. and John Boner Neighborhood Centers created P.R. Mallory, LLC in 2018 and proposed creative reuse and ambitious restoration plans.
It is now home to two schools, Paramount Schools of Excellence Englewood and Purdue Polytechnic High School, and Uplift Produce, a hydroponics growing operation.
