The Alley (created in collaboration with The Arts Council of Indianapolis and Buckingham Companies) is an outdoor community gathering space where guests can experience live music and art in a casual setting.
Blending live instrumentation and spoken word poetry, this presentation explores the contours and creative boundaries of jazz improvisation and poetry. The Cabaret Artist-in-Residence Lasana D. Kazembe is joined by Indy’s jazz guru, Rob Dixon, as well as bassist Brandon Meeks, and drummer-percussionist Richard ‘Sleepy’ Floyd. Wah Wah and Whatnot: A Love Note to Jazz is a carefully curated evening of creativity featuring musical and poetic tributes to various jazz icons including Dizzy Gillespie, Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach, and Ron Carter.
Lasana D. Kazembe is the inaugural Artist in Residence at The Cabaret. A published poet and spoken word artist, he has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Africa. His work is interlaced with storied traditions found in jazz, blues, spirituals, hip-hop, and the deep well of Africana/Black American cultural traditions both spoken and written.
