Your Summer in a Flash: Writing for the Moment

Your Summer in a Flash: Writing for the Moment

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Indiana Writers Center

Our workshop focuses on flash fiction, micro essays, prose poems, and writing suited to distill a moment. The summer is waning, and our experiences are worth recording.

For no other purpose than to preserve a little bit of everything happening in our lives, we will consider how writing can offer the opportunity for reflection. How we might tell a story in 500 words. How a micro essay encapsulates the immensity of our days. How a prose poem offers a glimpse into the universe through a keyhole.

The first meeting will be spent discussing readings selected by the instructor. Our discussions will be focused on our observations, keeping in mind the writerly strategies we might apply to our own work.

At our second meeting participants will have the opportunity to workshop their drafts. We will describe our responses so that the author has a sense of the reader’s experience.

The collaborative nature of our course offers writers a space to be heard and provides an opportunity for us to share ideas and work in a productive and safe environment. After the conclusion of the class participants are invited to submit a 5-10 page portfolio of work and receive feedback from the instructor.

Quite simply, we are dedicating our meetings to the wonderful task of reading and writing like writers. We foster one of the most essential elements of the writing and reading life – community.

*The cost of this class includes a $25 critiquing fee, to be remitted by IWC directly to the instructor, for work critiqued outside of class time.
