Making the Most of Monologues: How to Craft Compelling Speeches for the Stage

Making the Most of Monologues: How to Craft Compelling Speeches for the Stage

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Zoom

Monologues can make or break a dramatic moment on stage. In this workshop, we will look at famous monologues from stage plays, discuss new trends in monologues, and do several writing exercises to begin work on new pieces ourselves. We will discuss the function of a monologue on stage and how to approach writing both plot-driven and character-driven speeches as well as helpful poetic techniques to apply to our performance pieces. Students will come away having begun several new monologues and with tools to continue work on the form after the workshop has ended. While this class is geared towards playwrights, monologues can appear and be effective in both poetry and prose. All are encouraged to take this course no matter their experience.
