Essay, Op-Ed, or Feature? Mining, Writing, and Pitching Nonfiction

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Indiana Writers Center

Are you curious about writing an essay, op-ed, or feature?

This three-hour session reveals how to succeed at writing an essay, op-ed, or feature. We plan to explore how our lives and the world around us can inspire a variety of nonfiction writing, and how to determine which publications are potential fits for our work. We’ll also brainstorm and draft, share feedback, and consider a variety of resources to shape and eventually pitch our writing to a variety of outlets. For pre-class homework, please memorize the following: Rejection is normal and part of the process; so is revision. Keep trying. Sarah Layden’s recent essays, interviews and articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Poets & Writers, Salon, River Teeth, The Millions, Ladies’ Home Journal, The Indianapolis Star, and The Writer’s Chronicle.
