KANDACE SPRINGS Women Who Raised Me Part of the Jazz at The Cabaret Series Saturday, September 17 | 7 PM & 9:30 PM
“Kandace has a voice that could melt snow.” – Prince “If you’re in need of a new obsession, Kandace Springs is your godsend. Springs’ forceful and textured voice is the stuff legends are made of.” – BlackBook “Citing Nina Simone as her inspiration, Springs evinces a similarly powerful beauty, a satin ’n sinew verve, though her soul-infused sound more strongly suggests Cassandra Wilson by way of Whitney Houston.” JazzTimes
Every so often, a singer emerges who’s able to assimilate multiple musical touchstones and still come off sounding remarkably fresh and unburdened by the past. Kandace Springs is one of those artists. World-renowned singer, songwriter, and pianist Kandace Springs’ newest album
entitled The Women Who Raised Me, is her loving tribute to the great female singers who inspired her to become one of the premier jazz/soul vocalists of our time. The album features her unique interpretations of songs that she first heard growing up in Tennessee and ranges from such classic icons as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Carmen McRae, through 60’s legends Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield, and up to modern masters such as Sade and Lauryn Hill. Springs counts such song stylists as Prince, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone as her heroes, but she mimics none of them. Instead, Springs allows her comely alto voice to become a conduit that touches upon soul, jazz, and pop while transforming those aforementioned influences into a personalized sound that reveals itself effortlessly.
