Indy Latina Artists Opens Inaugural Show “A Ver” at Saks Fifth Avenue

Indy Latina Artists (ILA, pronounced “Eee-Lah”), a group of Latina visual artists living in and around Indianapolis, Indiana, will debut its inaugural show, “A Ver,” at the Saks Fifth Avenue third floor gallery, at 8701 Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis, on September 17th, with an opening reception from 2pm to 5:30pm. Admission is free.

The show takes its name from the Spanish expression, “Yo voy a ir a ver la exhibición,” “I’m going to go see the exhibition.” “A ver” can also mean “let’s see,” and serves as an invitation for the larger Indianapolis community to come see 2-dimensional artwork by this group, comprised of people who identify as female and of Latino descent or heritage.

“Our hope is that this exhibition gives us the opportunity to show our strengths and our own creative individuality as Latinas,” Mirvia Sol Eckert, cofounder, said. “This is our first showing, debuting our members. We want Indy to know that we are to be taken seriously, not only as women, but as Latina artists. We want to show the state of Indiana that we have a voice, that we matter, and to cast light on certain aspects of the Latino culture as well.”

Indy Latina Artists (ILA) was founded in the fall of 2021 by Mirvia Sol Eckert and Mary E. Mindiola to create community through art, to recognize the contribution of Latinas in the arts, and to empower, mentor, encourage, and promote the work, as well as to provide a showcase for Latina artists and their voices.

“Representation matters,” Eckert said. “I believe Latino artists, especially women, have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously, and at times, we just need to promote ourselves and each other more. We’re searching for people in leadership positions within organizations and the community to assist where possible in our attempt to expand the diversity of the Indy art scene.”

Indy Latina Artists is currently planning future shows, including at the Circle City Industrial Complex in 2023. Some of the upcoming shows will be juried. Each opportunity will allow the member artists to network with additional artists or art fans in the area, and the group has been organizing meet-ups with membership to help strengthen bonds and to learn from each other.

“There are talented Latina artists out here in Indy, and we want to shine a light on them,” Eckert said. “Representation is absolutely key. Our Latina voices matter. I hope our audience understands that Latina artists have our own forms of expression and art styles and that we are serious in our craft.”

Artistas Latinas de Indy ILA , abrirá su show estreno “A Ver” en Saks Fifth Avenue

El grupo de Artistas Latinas de Indy (ILA) un grupo de artistas visuales quienes viven en los alrededores de Indianapolis IN., tendrán su show estreno: “A Ver.” Esta exhibición tomará lugar el día 17 de Septiembre en el tercer piso de la galleria Saks Fifth Ave, localizada en 8701 Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis, IN. La ceremonia de apertura tomara lugar de 2pm a 5:30pm. La entrada es totalmente gratuita.

La exhibición toma su nombre de la expresión en español “voy a ir a ver la exhibición”  también del verbo “ver”, la cual es una invitación a la comunidad de Indianapolis para ir a disfrutar y ver arte de estos artistas que se identifican con el sexo femenino y son de descendencia Latina.

“Nuestra esperanza es que este show nos dé la oportunidad de demostrar nuestras fortalezas así como también nuestra propia individualidad como latinas,” así lo indica Mirvia Sol Eckert, una de la las co-fundadoras del grupo. “Este es nuestro primer show estreno para nuestras miembros y queremos ser tomadas en serio en Indianapolis no solo como mujeres pero también como artistas latinas. Queremos demostrarle al estado de Indiana que tenemos una voz, un valor y una presencia; así como también darle luz as los diferentes aspectos latinos de nuestra cultura.”

Indy Latina Artists fue fundada en el otoño de 2021 por las artistas Mirvia Sol Eckert y Mary E. Mindiola. Este grupo se creó para proyectar comunidad a travez del arte y reconocer la contribución de mujeres latinas en el arte;  así también para enpoderar, aconsejar, y fomentar el trabajo de artistas latinas por medio de exhibiciones que le den voz a las artistas latinas de Indy.

“La representación tiene importancia,” dice Eckert. “Yo creo que las artistas latinas, especialmente mujeres, tenemos que trabajar el doble para ser tomadas en serio. Por esto, hay momentos en que necesitamos más auto promoción así como también promocionarnos en grupo. Actualmente estamos buscando personas con posiciones de liderazgo en organizaciones y en grupos de la comunidad para que nos ayuden en lo que sea posible con nuestros esfuerzos de extender la diversidad del escenario artístico en Indiana.”

El grupo Indy Latina Artists está actualmente planeando próximas exhibiciones incluyendo entre otras una en el Circle City Industrial Complex en el 2023. Algunas de las futuras exhibiciones serán con jurado. Cada exhibición dará oportunidad a sus miembros de crear una red de contactos con artistas y fans en el area. El grupo también ha estado organizando reuniones para fortalecer las relaciones de sus miembros, compartir y aprender de cada uno.

“Hay gran talento de artistas latinas en Indy y nosotros queremos proyectarle una luz a ellas,” dice Eckert. “Representación es la absoluta clave. Nuestras voces latinas son importantes. Espero que nuestra audiencia entienda que las artistas latinas tenemos cada una nuestro propio estilo individual y nuestra forma individual de expresarnos y queremos ser tomadas en serio por nuestra artesanía y trabajo.”
