Sir John Falstaff is in love! Or so he would have you think. When Falstaff sends Mistress Ford and Mistress Page identical love letters in an attempt to gain some financial advantage, the women quickly determine that they are being conned and turn the tables on their would-be suitor with a series of increasingly uproarious practical jokes. In a time where women in plays are often seduced by predatory knights and subject to the wrath of jealous husbands, Shakespeare’s Merry Wives breaks the pattern by putting the power back in their hands.
This hilarious, high-energy cutting show directed by Jeff Bick defies the notion that Falstaff is the hero by giving focus to the voices of the brilliant and astonishingly funny women at the center of one of Shakespeare’s beloved comedies.
