'Qaddafi's Cook' - a play by Lance S. Belville and Carlos Ambrosi

Presented by District Theatre at District Theatre

Qaddafi’s Cook is a run-for-your-life tale of high stakes espionage. Two young Mexican chefs caught in the tailspin of Qaddafi, the world’s bloodiest foodie. The naive cooks have gone to Libya for the big league – diplomatic employment. Stripped of their rights, their documents are seized upon entering the country. No one around them has any interest in their survival.

Food in its aromas and rituals is an integral part of the experience as sous chef Fredy recreates onstage the tyrant’s favorite dishes — each standing as a metaphor of totalitarianism. By the end, the audience can almost smell the fear of the people while questioning their own complicity in misrule. In a separate reality, a US government agent probes the riddle of the contents of a worn backpack now in the hands of Mexican authorities.

Qaddafi’s Cook premiered in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, at the Hotel California, where the co-authors first met in 2013. The play has been performed in Hollywood, San Diego, New York City, and in the 2020 juried Latin American Season of Actors Centre in London’s West End. The play was selected for the 2021 San Francisco International Arts Festival (postponed due to the pandemic) and now rescheduled for 2023.
