‘It’s the only life that I’ve ever known’ is an exhibition of works by Queer-identifying Herron School of Art and Design alumni.
It’s the only life that I’ve ever known aims to highlight diverse conceptual and stylistic practice that contributes to the ever-expanding dialogue of queer identity. Featured artists span a variety of media and artistic practices, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and performance. This exhibition seeks to highlight the changing and lasting impression these artists have had on the artistic community of Herron and beyond. Meant to celebrate the diverse talents of these artists, the careers of contributors began at Herron, dating back to the 1960s. Without seeking to pigeonhole this talented group of individuals through one aspect of their identity, this show aims to celebrate the many LGBTQ+ artists that have shared their talent, strength, and passion for artistic creation throughout the past several decades.
This exhibition is made possible by a gift from the Indiana University Queer Philanthropy Circle and a Pride-filled donor.
It’s the only life that I’ve ever known will be on view in the Marsh Gallery of Eskenazi Hall from March 22 through April 22, 2023.
Multimedia artist Anthony Sonnenberg will give a talk from 6 to 7 p.m., March 22, in Eskenazi Hall’s Basile Auditorium in conjunction with the exhibition’s opening. A reception will follow. Guests who prefer to attend Sonnenberg’s talk virtually can register in advance through Zoom at go.iu.edu/4MJJ.
