This is an art exhibition featuring painters from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar (Burma). The artists show the cultural heritage of both countries, the challenges they are currently facing, and how they use art to tell their stories.
Mirrors of Common Destiny: Seeing Through the Eyes of Another is an opportunity to see two countries from two different continents and realize that their experiences and their stories are actually quite similar. Both countries were colonialized. Both countries had the Europeans leave a power vacuum that was filled by dictators. Both have suffered from ethnic conflict and civil war. And now individuals from those two countries have gone through refugee camps, sometimes for years, until they have resettled in Indianapolis.
The exhibition depicts life, culture, and conflict from the perspectives of artists from both countries. There is an opportunity to learn empathy and gain understanding of what it means to be members of a common story, even from different part of the world.
