Are you interested in learning to work with miniatures?  This summer the museum will host 2 workshops for you to try!

 

June 8, 2013 Wiring Your Dollhouse Workshops

 

Instructor:  Mr. Carl R. Sahlberg, Creative Reproductions 2 Scale

 

This is a basic course on wiring your dollhouse or display.  This course is designed to eliminate the fears associated with wiring.  Mr. Sahlberg will introduce several new items that make doing your own wiring simpler and longer lasting.  You will receive a copy of his information booklet: "Easy Steps to a Well Wired Dollhouse"; and all the tools and materials needed to work with while in the class.  The workshop will concentrate on the practical wiring of a dollhouse or display rather than the technical aspects of electricity.

 

 

 

The workshop will be divided into two sessions:

 

Beginning Electrical Workshop; 8:00 am to 12 noon – Cost $55.00

 

Advanced Electrical Workshop:  1:00 pm to 5:00 pm – Cost $40.00

 

BOTH SESSIONS:  $95.00

 

The instructor highly recommends you attend both sessions.

 

Additional Information about the classes:

 

There will be a lot covered and this course will be a little unconventional.  The first task will be to construct a simple continuity tester and a 12 volt tester that will be used throughout the class. 

 

 

 

The following is the basic outline for the two sessions:

 

     I.  Handout Layout Gage, Electrical Booklet and Tester Parts

 

          A.  Assemble, wire and solder TWO TESTERS

 

               1.  Basic wiring instruction and soldering techniques

 

          B.  Discuss proper use and function of Layout Gage and Testers

 

     II. Discuss What one needs to know to begin wiring a dollhouse

 

          A.  How to select the right power supply

 

          B.  Wiring selection

 

               1.  Proper gage wire and why

 

               2.  Tape-wire vs. round wire (not really a difference)

 

               3.  Setting up different circuits within the dollhouse (wiring layout of rooms)

 

          C.  Different connections and junction points (Creating a permanent, solid circuit)

 

          D.  Where to look for help when you have a problem.

Making Books: Procedures and Tips

This is a basic workshop on making 1-inch scale books for your dollhouse or display. This course is designed to be an introduction to making books. Marti will provide handouts that cover each of the techniques taught and all the tools and materials needed to work with while in the class.

 

The workshop will be divided into two sessions.  Each session stands alone, so you can sign up for just one session or for both.

 

Faux Books; 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Cost $35.00

In this session, we will first make an individual faux book by wrapping a book cover around a wood block base.  However, with some detailing tricks that you will learn the book will look quite realistic laying on a desk or coffee table.  Then we will a group of faux books to set on a shelf in your bookcase.  This set is also made with a wooden base but detailed in such a way that it looks like have a set of multiple books.

 

Readable Books:  1:30 to 4:30 pm

Cost $35.00

In this session we will make a book with readable text.  The students will be able to choose from at least three different books.  We will complete one in class and they can then make the others at home.  Additionally the instructor will explain how she creates her readable books so that the students can make their own books.  The second book that we make will be an aged open book (that doesn’t close) for laying on a desk or on a shelf in a bookcase.  It is made with plain paper that the students will learn to gently age to look like a very old book.  You will have a choice of at least three different text pages for your book.
