Spineless - book art exhibit

at Unknown

The Harrison Center for the Arts and the Herron Art Library of the IUPUI University Library are pleased to present Spineless – a group book arts exhibit now in its 6th year opening on Friday, August 2, 2013 from 6 to 9pm. Work from over 15 artists was chosen for this show to take place in the Harrison Gallery. Opening night, there will be a selection of books from the Herron Art Library’s permanent collection as well.

Encompassing a wide range of media, artists’ books are works of art that are sometimes realized in the form of a book, but not always. These works are usually published in small editions, though sometimes they are one-of-a-kind objects.  Artists’ books have employed a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs or loose items contained in a box.  Creative writing is often part of the artists’ book concept, including poetry and essays and playful text.  Though artists have been active in printing and book productions for centuries, the artists’ book is primarily a 20th century form.

Also that night, work by Susan Shorter, Flannery O’Kafka and Bryan Tisdale. In Gallery No. 2 – The Bindery, A pop-up co-working initiative for Indy’s Design Community hosted by Pattern and AIGA. In the City Gallery – Music of Paul Smallman (City Songs) and the Neighborhood Ballad Project (Andrew Christenberry, Brandon Lott, and Tucker Krajewski) with photography by Susanna Taft. In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery – Summercycle (Indiana) – new work by Nathan Foxton.
