Ghost Brothers of Darkland County

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County

at Unknown

In the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi in 1967, a terrible tragedy took the lives of two brothers and a beautiful young girl. During the next forty years, the events of that night became the stuff of local legend. But legend is often just another word for lie. Joe McCandless knows what really happened; he saw it all. The question is whether or not he can bring himself to tell the truth in time to save his own troubled sons, and whether the ghosts left behind by an act of violence will help him, or tear the McCandless family apart forever.

Clowes is proud to welcome the supernatural southern gothic musical creation by songwriter and Indiana native John Mellencamp. Mellencamp joined forces with world-renowned suspense novelist Stephen King and music and film producer T Bone Burnett to weave this dark and twisting tale, and set it to a haunting and original score. Not for the faint of heart, this thrilling and eerie production will have audiences glued to the edge of their seats.

A prolific novelist, King is a legendary master of suspense, and in this, his debut as a playwright, he delivers everything one could ask for. Indeed, Ghost Brothers impresses as a paranormal morality tale on the surface, but at its core it spins a story as ancient as Cain and Abel-or, for one dysfunctional family living in backwoods Mississippi, as recent as a mysterious tragedy from 40 years past.

The superb blues ‘n’ roots music of Ghost Brothers reflects the wide range of styles and influences suited to a work that jumps across decades. Mellencamp’s unconventional score uses its prolific melodies to reveal the emotions and inner workings of the characters – like the unapologetic delivery of "That’s Who I Am," the intense passion of "How Many Days," or the cunning "That’s Me" which establishes the persona of The Shape-the Puck-like figure at the heart of Ghost Brothers who floats between the worlds of the living and the spirits. Numerous other highlights include the thunderous, dramatic ensemble piece "Tear This Cabin Down," and "Jukin,"- a grease-laden delta-rock masterpiece.

Putting King’s words and Mellencamp’s songs on the stage is in the skilful hands of acclaimed director Susan Booth, who calls the musical "a kind of new age travelling medicine show." "This is a gothic story-driven rock concert," says Booth. "I want the emphasis to be on this fantastic score and our great singers and how the story advances us from song to song. In most musicals, the songs advance the narrative. With Ghost Brothers, the story will advance the songs."
