Samuel’s exhibit, Underlined Phrases Of A Limitless Format explores the dynamic expressions of his upbringing in the city of his youth, New York City – a place full of challenges and adventures where its young people would rise up and create an art form out of and in response to the social, economic and political conditions of the times. The exhibit includes both artwork displayed in the Clowes Main Lobby as well as “tagging” demonstrations on the front lawn.

Samuel E. Vásquez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved with his family to New York City in 1979 where he was introduced to graffiti art. Shortly thereafter, he joined numerous graffiti crews from Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Throughout the 1980s his art graced the New York City subways, rooftops and walls – including the Graffiti Hall of Fame. Today, Samuel works on abstract expressionist paintings and he lives in Indianapolis.
