More than Trifles: An Evening of One Act Plays by Susan Glaspell

Pulitzer prize winning playwright Susan Glaspell (1876-1948) was an author ahead of her time writing passionately about contemporary issues on gender and ethics. We will celebrate three of her works this fall in Peine Arena Theatre with Trifles, considered one of the most important American plays ever written, as the centerpiece. This drama, based on an actual case in rural Iowa, is a study of roles as men search in vain for material clues to a farmer’s murder while the women, brought along to clean the site, are ignored. Through their work and observations, the women deduct the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. On a lighter note, Suppressed Desires follows the results of a woman’s preoccupation with Freud’s theories of dream analysis when she applies them to her husband and sister. Much to her chagrin, not everyone, including herself, are happy with the results. The final play will be chosen from two of Glaspell’s allegorical one acts, The Outside or The People, after the auditions and casting.
