What does Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, Cathy Day’s Circus in Winter and Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson have in common? All are novels-in-stories, existing between a collection of stories and a novel. The stories in this form can stand-alone, but together create a deeper impact that is reflective of a novel. In this class we will examine samples from novels-in-stories and discuss common attributes. We’ll explore this form further through in-class writing, some of which may prompt your own novel-in-stories.
There is no charge for this class. Melissa Fraterrigo was recently awarded a grant to complete her own novel-in-stories. This workshop is made possible in part through the support of the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
